NAME: Leah Ryene Poe
GENDER: female
AGE: 18
SPIRIT PATRON: Night, Fang of the Shadows.
SPIRIT ANIMAL: 'Hobb' an albino Crow.
RANK: None. Potential recruit. Final years student at the Whitter-Leyline School for Troubled Girls.
EYE COLOR: tea green
HAIR COLOR: copper-red
MAGIC: Currently no instore magic. But … she exudes an apparently innate supernatural 'Gremlin-like' aura effect (no doubt upon discovery magic-techs would like to further study this phenomena). It's an invisible intrinsic field, which extends an unknown distance ecliptically around her. Generally she tries to suppress and bottle the aura up (with varying degrees of success). It has somewhat a will, personality and capricious agenda of its own. Leah doesn't have a good handle on her aura. She has no idea why she is 'blessed' with the ability & sometime dwells a bit on the why mehhhh? Thus far she's refrained from confiding in anyone about it for several reasons i) they'll probably think she's attention seeking or delusional ii) fear of being doomed to be someone’s lab rat iii) locked up for public safety reasons.
She’s not entirely in control of her ability and when emotionally distraught, nervous or surprised her aura leaks or outright pops on, which can yield sometimes serendipitous, sometimes comic, ... and sometimes random and self-sabotaging results generally less than useful. She is also guilty of periodically deliberately loosing and encouraging her aura to wreak havoc. She has no control over the specific effects of what it does, just if it's off or on (mostly). So this can be akin to calling an air strike on your own position. That said the more complex and advanced the device/situation, or the more ironic the happenstance, the more probable the subject/object will be prone to 'tripping up'.
The effect is fairly variable and somewhat capriciously random. Examples:
cake in the oven falling flat, clock on the wall stopping, fuses blow, guns jamming, door creaking no matter how well oiled it is. A nearby PDA might 'blue screen', continuously dial a toll number, randomly play a cheesy ring tone, or set the homepage to a porn site. Security surveillance tends to fizzle around her. Engines wont start, welds fall apart. The more technologically advanced something is the more likely to be affected. Anything that has 'fuzzy' logic to it is especially begging for trouble. If you want a spanner in the works ... Leah is your girl.
DESCRIPTION: At first glance somewhat 'bookish'. 5’5”, green eyes, copper-red hair, small pert freckled nose. Features fair skin, little make up, wiry lean but not overly athletic. School uniform. Ugh. Usually worn a shade more casual than the staff strictly approve of. Typically travels with a book beneath one arm and duffle bag slung behind her. Preferred weekend civvies are hoodie & jeans.
PERSONALITY: Generally well intentioned, but sneaky - likes to fly under the radar. Not terribly respective of authority figures; a social ugly duckling with an anachronistic tomboy bent.
Likes: the rush of adrenaline from time to time, old-fashioned books, generally preferring non-fiction to escapade romanticism, chewing gum, muted rather than vibrant colours, climbing, chocolate, personal space, crosswords.
Dislikes: Prom queens, being the centre of attention, humid weather, lace & frills, dogs, fish-stew.
+ Fit: Hale and in good health other than the occasional touch of spring hay fever. While not an overt athlete she is fit, and rather a good swimmer and climber. Not unattractive.
+ Smart: Bright and a quick study, but short of being in the upper echelon of academia. Applies herself ably learning from books, but shies away from modern media aids. Likes theoretical math & engineering, as well as literature.
+ Deft: good with her hands, occasionally light-fingered, and fairly proficient using/repairing strictly simple mechanical objects, having had a lot of experience in 'fixing' them. Cunning with slingshot and knife (but lacks any technical fighting style).
+ Some street sense: while not desiring any gang affiliation, Leah knows whose turf to avoid, and what petty criminal specialties each local crypt has.
+ Versed in reading body language and will play into someone’s tells, in order to manipulate a situation to her advantage.
+/- Optimist: Suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune has given her backbone, self-reliance, and the ability to quickly pick herself up again. More broadly she has the feeling her aura is special (if frequently inconvenient) and maybe has some unrealised potential. An ironic understated confidence, that one day she will find her place.
+/- Curious: She likes to know what's in that locked room, and on occasions will ask impertinent questions. You learn stuff, but sometimes doors are locked for good reasons, and people don't always react well when prodded.
+/- No long term plan or goals. Nothing set in stone, no plans that couldn't be broken, but no traction towards anything much either. Potentially mouldable clay.
+/- Few personal ties: Leah hasn't formed many social ties or collected many friends as result of being moved from school to school regularly, and wary of room mates getting too close and deducing her supernatural hang-up. While she has few friends to call upon for help, she does not feel obligated or hamstrung by their problems. She's had less opportunity to discover boys at an all girls boarding school so has no current romantic attachment. This also speaks to naivety. Social media ugly duckling, and to appearances somewhat introverted. Which suits her just fine. She's not too interested in forming close personal attachments.
- Streak of spitefulness: vs. those that rub her up the wrong way, or mess with her. She doesn't forgive or forget easily. Happy to bide her time, and resort to dirty tactics.
- Technological Klutz: Doesn't get on well with and play nicely with gadgets. Complex technological devices sooner or later 'break' around Leah. [Her ability would make her a rather trying partner for tech-reliant agent.]
- Criminal Record: She does have a juvenile criminal record consisting of: shoplifting, pick pocketing, and minor assault.
- Fears: Doesn't like to fly. Being at the whim of such a hugely complex technological device makes her nervous. When nervous her aura tends to escape her control, and leak out. Planes that misbehave tend to land awkwardly. It's a self-reinforcing proposition. With motor vehicles the she's (mostly) able to restrain her aura, when wished.
- Lacks finances and resources: ward of the state.
- Never travelled abroad.
HISTORY:
* Born 11 Feb 1995, in Northern Ireland.
* Mother, Helene Rena Poe (nee Shaw) died 23 Apr 2000; the casualty of a plane crash, in which there were only 4 survivors including Leah (whom was five at the time).
* Father, Gregory Richard Poe died 7 Apr 1994; before Leah was born.
* Leah was made a ward of the state, and was subsequently shuffled between adoptee agencies and government institutions like a bad penny. She was considered for adoption on three occasions by potential families, each time, the family stated Leah seemed 'accident prone' and troublesome, without being able to cite specific instances.
EQUIPMENT: Access to typical campus equipment, but generally avoids computers and handhelds. Few personal items and other possessions. She has a penchant for a scuffed copy of McBeth, which is infact hollowed out concealing a switchblade. Study effects, an old wind-up watch in a leather wrist guard, chewing gum, and Macgyver knife. Stashed in a private locker: ice/climbing axe, rope & climbing kit, bicycle lock-chain, and a composite hunting-grade slingshot (most of which is technically confiscatable in the school).
She’s on a learners licence and owns a low powered 2nd hand trail bike, which eats into her trifling sum of saved funds from the past summers holiday job in a bookstore.
RELATIONSHIPS: As they develop.
