the fae:
(Plural fae, singular fey.)
In old times, fae were thought to be little trickster creatures of a few inches tall with fairy wings. They couldn't be more wrong.
In reality, fae are not the dreams of a midsummer night, but the nightmares. Creatures of illusion and mystery, they are unpredictable and will often pretend to be something harmless. It takes either a magic-user or a decryptometer (technology developed by the Silence) to figure out if who you're dealing with is actually who you're dealing with.
One thing fae cannot do well is imitate a human. Their voices are metallic and sound like bells when they try to speak a human language, and so unless they have mastery over sound or a mask, they cannot sound like a human.
When the dinosaurs were driven extinct, the same meteor had huge repercussions through the magical energies of the planet. Due to this, almost all of the fey were sealed away and forced into hibernation. However, they're beginning to reawaken: and Britain has been chosen as their first target. For unknown reasons, the binding spells here were not as strong as the ones throughout the rest of the planet, and thus the fae have begun to saw away at them. It's the job of the Silence to keep the most powerful fae in their prisons and eliminate any lesser fae that manages to escape.
Should one of the Seelie Nobles fully manage to free themselves, all of their followers would also be freed. If enough lesser fey become freed, then they will band together and try and free their noble. However, most lesser fey are not patient enough to work through their bindings, and thus the Silence concentrates its efforts on greater fae.

Geist:
These small, ethereal creatures are a nuisance. They work as scouts, mostly, but have a type of hive mind. A single one could be easily defeated, but a hundred would cluster together, forming something more powerful, yet each geist separate from the whole. They're easy to kill with magic, and most modern weapons work well against them. Lightning works especially well.
Pixie:
Small troublemakers and pranksters, the Silence rarely troubles with pixies. Sometimes newer members or apprentices are sent out to test their skills on the flighty little sprites, but they are quite easy to defeat, especially using frost.
Pixies usually look like fairies made of decayed, rotting plant matter.
Poltergeist:
Despite the terror they've caused in the past, poltergeists are really just a minor destructive force with little brains and a desire to break useless things. They're defeated with a quick snare of shadow, and are sometimes used as tests for apprentices.
Poltergeists are small, translucent orbs.
Gnome:
Stocky, small, and irritating, gnomes are usually considered a nuisance by even less experienced Silence members, and they're mainly useful for hitting toes and shouting taunts. They look much like the traditional vision of a gnome. A quick blast of fire usually silences them.
Sylph:
Sylphs are generally considered easy to kill, but their power is in their bodies. Any contact of skin to a sylph causes a shock to the victim, and their claws are coated in a weak poison. They are, however, very susceptible to magic and are very fearful.
Nymph:
These creatures are common, but not deadly. Though they aren't hostile to Silence members, the Silence has to keep an eye on them because they are very loving of people -- which makes them very numerous is cities. They stay hidden by remaining slightly insubstantial, and through slight enchantments, the general population can't see them. Encountering a nymph is harmless, but if the nymph gets angry at you, then you have a problem. Nymphs are extremely deadly when angry -- having extreme power over earth magic. They are mostly resistant to all magic except for fire, and due to their slightly insubstantial form, most physical weapons can't damage them. If they escape, then they can come back with a horde of imps and perhaps even a spectre.
Imp:
A single imp would barely be considered a nuisance, something that any member could take out, but they rarely travel alone. Their razor-sharp fangs and claws can easy dig into skin, and they have an inherent power over fire magic. A quick blast of any magic will take one out, but they usually travel in packs of twenty or more.
Brownie:
This is the first of the more "dangerous" fae. It can transform into small animals and children, and has powers over plants and wood to boot. Most Silence members consider brownies a minor threat, however, to newer recruits they can be quite dangerous. They're resistant to most magic, but a a bit of earth in the right spot works like a charm.
Brownies are terrible, shriveled things when seen in their true forms. They look much like Golum from Lord of the Rings, but with mottled brown skin.
Gremlin:
Much like poltergeists, gremlins are out there to destroy things. They, however, target more important machinery and objects. Though not hard to kill with shadows when alone, large amounts can create "infestations" that are extremely frustrating and sometimes quite dangerous, as they carry around magical blunderbusses.
Gremlins look like little goblins, and they usually like to steal childrens' coats to swaddle themselves in.
Banshee:
All types of members know to fear the banshee's scream, or at least get your back to a good rock. With the ability to morph into female humans, birds, and hyenas as well as control over ice, these fae are no laughing matter. Electricity and light seem to work well against them, though.
Banshees look like translucent women, whose hair acts like they're constantly underwater.
Spectre:
Spectres are terrible beings, and their powers aren't anything to joke around with. With abilities to move fast and nearly translucent, they make excellent scouts, but what makes them deadly is how hard they are to kill: normal weapons can work, but to a lesser degree than magic. They are entirely resistant to anything of Earth magic, but extremely weak to Shadow magic.
