((I have an Abbey on me. Apologies.)) --- Skyler took a breath and opened the door to the quarters. It was a nicely sized area, some sitting space on the sides of the door, lighting, some cabinets and shelf space. It was mostly empty, but there was the occasional standard decorative item.
He was told that his room was the one to the left of the entrance, so he made his way back there. It turned once, and there was some slightly private room, and then again, which is where his bed, nightstand, and other various items were. The bed itself was more of a cot, but it still wasn't simple and cheap. The Silence was a government agency, yes, but it was a lot more important than a lot of other ones.
He set his bag on the bed and turned on his bedside light. Perhaps the best part of the walls were that little light would reflect back, especially with the built-in wardrobe being black. Perhaps that was their intention, but perhaps not. He went over to examine the wardrobe, opening the shelves and eyeing a bit of room as a built in closet. He hoped that uniforms wouldn't be a major part of this -- he despised uniforms.
Gordiana materialized next to him and jumped up on the bed. He grinned and shook his head as she got comfortable. "Enjoy yourself. Who knows what his spirit animal could be."
She laughed, in a very wolf-y way, but then said, "I'll just stay back here if it's something fierce. Can't say I won't chase it though."
He sighed but let it go. She couldn't see the folly in her thinking, but that was all right -- ignorance is bliss, right?
He walked back out to the main area and decided to look around a bit. The chairs were nice, for the most part, and seemed to be there for comfort and small amounts of small-talk. The extra privacy was unexpected -- it seemed like it would have been easier to just give them their own private rooms and make them smaller, but perhaps it was for added defense. Regardless, he wouldn't speculate on their ideas.
He pulled out a book (a handful were in one of the shelves, mostly on basic magic and whatnot), and decided to start reading. Better prepare himself for whatever was to come.

((Sorry it's kinda short. Gotta get back into the swing of it.))
Joshua sipped idly at the cup of water. Every now and then he glanced at his watch, though it was more out of habit than any sense of urgency. When the last drop was gone, he bent the paper cup between his fingers, methodically crushing it into a small ball, and placed it into his pocket.
When his watch beeped, he set down the hall, picking up and shouldering the rucksack at his feet as he did so. A quiet, but still sharp, rhythm of clicks told him Gudrun was following.
“What was the pause for?” she asked.
“I don’t want to just walk in with a drink in my hand,” he said. “It’s rather unprofessional.”
“Or a sign of control. Of ease.” He could almost imagine her lips flicking up.
“Or arrogance. I doubt I would want to project such an image so early in the game.”
Gudrun made a slight humming noise. That rarely meant anything good.
Their minds fell silent as they reached the door. For safety measures, Joshua checked a small piece of paper that previously lived in his pocket. Correct room. The door opened smoothly under his touch, which was a nice surprise.
The first thing he noticed, of course, was the other human being. Joshua gave him a cursory glance. He seemed fairly normal. He turned his attention briefly the room, making sure he knew the layout. It was fairly simple. Basic living area in the middle. His room was on the right, as far as he knew. It occurred to him, briefly, that Gudrun had placed herself behind his legs. It wasn’t to hide, as her head was plainly in view and held high, so the meaning was lost to him.
Joshua looked back to the man and tipped his head slightly in greeting. “Joshua Evans,” he said, the tone simple and slightly flat.

Skyler glanced up at the other person, who seemed distant and off, not what he was expecting. Still he smiled and said, "Skyler Ethans. I'm unprofessional and rather unpleasant at times, but forgive me on that!" He set the book down and got out of the chair and offered a hand.
He waved a hand in the general direction of the other roomlette. "Your room is over there, and it's pretty standard. Bed, nightstand, wardrobe, bit of shelf and cabinet space. Go see for yourself. Actually pretty nice, all things considered. I expected a lot less."
Gordiana poked her head out behind the corner and first and foremost, saw the other man, but then, more important, she saw the muntjac. A playful growl rumbled through her as she eyed the delicate creature. In the real world the muntjac might have been dinner, but for her it was simply play. She was a bit immature at times, if fun.
Skyler noted the deer but made no comment. He'd like to see the outcome of this game himself, regardless of who had fun and who didn't. He sat back down in his chair, but after a second, began to speak again. "The café is down the hallway and to the right a bit, but we have a small refrigerator in here. And there's a kitchen next to the café, so I can cook if you need me to."
He looked down at his book, as he was re-reading on the Spirit Zodiacs, to have a more fundamental knowledge of them. They were fascinating, but it was review, and he hated dull review. Still, he peddled on in his reading! This could mean life or death later. --- ((Apologies for my shortness as well. I suggest making a quit exit to the training rooms, somehow and sometime, since we can just bump into Reg and Vincent there. And enjoy actual RP and not this awkward room-mating stuff.
room mating

Joshua tried not to let the man's energy affect him, yet he still found the corners of his mouth twitching. He took the offered hand with cool indifference, and released it as quickly as he could. At the man's words, he glanced back to the room towards the right, before turning his eyes back to one who said he was Skyler Ethans.
This was different than what he expected. Very different.
"To be fair, you weren't expecting much." He could almost hear a slight purr in Gudrun's voice. Or was that a growl?
When Skyler sat back down, Joshua walked about the common room, carefully inspecting it. After a few seconds, he realized casual conversation would probably be warranted, and said rather carelessly, "Why would you feel the need to cook?" He glanced at Skyler while he said this, but quickly turned back to studying the titles on the books. "Or that I might need you to cook? Kindness like that is out of place here."
"Eye contact," Gudrun said. "Eye contact when you talk to people."
Joshua was never quite sure why, but for some reason the little spirit animal thought she was his mother. It didn't really bother him as much as it should have. It made no difference; no matter if he listened to her or ignored her, she still spoke her mind about it.
Which was why, as Joshua piddled around and made a show of look at the books, Gudrun stood by the door with her head still high. Careful, almost bird-like, motions let her take in what most would feel the need to more slowly survey. She knew, rather instinctively, that the wolf spirit animal was watching her. It wasn't yet clear to her what either of them would do, but what was clear was that it was not in either of their interests to fight each other. Not seriously, at the least.
Well, most likely. If there was anything to be learned, it was that nothing is guaranteed.

Gordiana's nose twitched as she walked forward, curious by the animal. As she walked closer to the animal, she found the urge to jump forward harder and harder to resist. And eventually, that urge was too hard to resist. She leaped forward, dying to chase the animal.
Skyler laughed at his spirit animal, eyes still looking in the direction of them, and said, “Oh, she loves her play. Make sure that your animal knows that as well... She'd never hurt another animal – well, maybe a rabbit, but never intentionally.” He glanced down and then to Joshua. “As for cooking? Well... Kindness out of place? Perhaps from officers, but I seem to think that if you don't have someone kind, then isolation is the only way to live. And I can't live with isolation – too lonely!”
He yawned and stretched, finally finding a reason to set the damn book down. Honestly, he despised the Spirit Zodiacs. Rather, he despised learning about them. He knew how they worked in a fundamental nature, but he didn't honestly care about all of the nuances of them. But, he knew he had to figure it out sooner or later. Or perhaps simply sooner or when he was dead.
“And you? Why would you think that kindness isn't needed? Or, at the least, friendship and trust?” His eyes were focused on the man, all the nuances of him that made his body truly his. “Aren't comrades supposed to have good-standing with each other? Feuds and fighting are good for motivation, but they will kill you in a combat situation – whether it's pride that kills you or simply not getting help when you need it most.”
In fact, a lot about Joshua was a curiosity to him. Why was he so bad at socializing? He didn't seem at all like the asocial kids that Skyler knew at high school. All of them were kids who had no money, no friends, no one to be safe around. And yet, here was Joshua – a fit man who was handsome by some standard or another, of a normal height, and of normality all the way through. It truly didn't make sense for him to be so... distant. But perhaps that was simply because he couldn't understand, being who he was.

“I should have been a fox, I should have been a fox!” Gudrun’s voice was at best described as hiss, and if it hadn’t been telepathic, Joshua wasn’t sure he would have heard it properly. “Or a tiger. A lion. Or a bear, even!” Even as she spoke, she backed up, trying to stay out of the wolf’s grasp and still trying to hold some sort of ground. Her lips curled back, revealing her sharp canines, though it was more out of habit than of intimidation.
Joshua glanced at the spirit animals, then to Skyler as he was speaking. “Apparently the wolf only wants to play a game,” he told the deer. The response was a variety of colourful words, so instead of paying attention to her, Joshua focused back on Skyler’s rather emphatic belief in kindness and friendship.
It was too strange. There was something in the way Skyler put words together, and it took Joshua until the end of the little passionate speech to realize what it was. It seemed honest, of all things. Like he truly believed in it. He supposed, after finding out everything thus far, that this was something one would desperately cling to. Something left, after all else seemed changed.
“It is easy to be kind without being kind,” he said. Instead of turning back to the books, as he was so inclined, he focused on Skyler’s face. Human faces were so uninteresting in so many regards, and yet those were the faces they had to stare at, day in, day out. Yet for some reason, such an uninteresting face was also the most expressive. And it occurred to him, as he watched for various expressions, that his sentence made no sense by itself.
“There are people who will treat you in such a way to gain your trust; they will act kind, but they are not kind people,” he said. “Trusting someone whose motives will eventually conflict with one’s own will eventually bring up other issues.” He waited to see if any more thoughts came to his lips. It was a very twisted road to get to the sentence “Kindness is out of place here”, with a variety of thinking that made sense and some that didn’t but seemed to.
“I have nothing against kindness, just those that hide behind it. Someone who is kind all of the time must have something to hide.” A pause. “Conversely, those that are kind none of the time must also be hiding something.”
“Balance is key. How zen.”
Joshua just took a deep breath. “Just pay attention to your canine problem and I'll pay attention to this.”

Skyler grinned and leaned back in his chair (it was more luxurious than he would have imagined), as well as a sparkle in his eyes. A conversation! He missed this! "I agree. You're notice of both extremes is quite pleasurable, something that makes me think that this isn't just you defending your beliefs, but true belief in what you believe." He laughed and shook his head. "Look at me, trying to come up with something to say."
He smiled, but it faded quickly. "People are like that, here especially. Being kind without being kind, I mean. Gaining your trust and using you. Maybe I'm simply naïve for being a business executive or a politician, but I'm not too naïve to be a soldier. Trust... Trust your comrades, and not your commanding officers."
'Gordiana... Stop playing for now.'
Gordiana stopped and turned back to Skyler, worry running through her system. She walked up to Skyler and tilted her head, but stayed silent. Skyler looked like he was going to say something, but she wasn't sure what.
"That's a lie, Joshua. Trust who you think you should trust. Whether that's me or the opposite of me, you can't trust someone if they haven't proved it, can you?" Skyler asked, his eyes distant and his mind somewhere else. And then, he shook his head. "But I talk too much! What time is it? Just past lunch if I'm right. There's that restaurant in the courtyard, great smelling food, or I can cook something if you don't want to pretend to like me."
There he was, the man who's never upset, being himself. If he wasn't in front of Joshua, he would get upset for being upset, but strangely, being in front of Joshua was the thing that kept the spiral of unforgiving emotions from going off. But how much would Joshua see? How clear would it be to him? These thoughts raged in Skyler's mind, and he couldn't stop that, the primal fear and urge to be noticed. --- ((HAVE A BAD REPLY KIZ I LOVE YOU SORRY FOR THIS I JUST KNEW THAT IT WOULD HAPPEN AND I HAD TO GET IT OVER WITH))
